Special Issue of the Finnish Journal of Music Education 2023 – Call for Papers

Finnish Journal of Music Education (FJME) is inviting papers for a special issue, “Emerging Perspectives on Instrumental and Vocal Pedagogy”, to explore the most recent relevant research to support instrumental/vocal teachers in delivering individualized/group instruction in keyboard, wind, string and percussion instruments, and voice.

The particular focus of this special issue is on student-centered and “humanly compatible” pedagogies (Musumeci, 2005; Pozo et al., 2022) that 1) prioritize the physical and psychological health of music students through the inclusion of specific contents and practices related to developing both cognitive and social-emotional skills, and 2) challenge overused power hierarchies in the music studio.

The topic can be approached from the perspective of various disciplines and research questions. We hope this special issue to reflect the multiplicity of approaches and viewpoints to instrumental and vocal (performance) pedagogy at all educational levels, from music schools to higher education, as well as informal and nonformal music education – both on a one-to-one or small group basis.

We welcome full text submissions in English in the following forms:

  • Article (peer-reviewed)
  • Report (non-peer-reviewed)

Articles should meet the general research article criteria. The maximum length is 7.000 words (including references). Each article will be blind-reviewed, and the required revisions will be checked by three referees with relevant topical or methodological expertise.

Reports are shorter texts that do not fit in the general research article structure but offer relevant information and research knowledge about the topic. The maximum length for reports is 3.500 words (including references).

The authors are responsible for anonymization of their manuscripts. Manuscripts should be submitted following the FJME referencing style guidelines. For further instructions, please read the guidelines for contributors: https://sites.uniarts.fi/en/web/fjme/instruction-to-contributors. Please, submit your text to the guest editor by e-mail as a MS Word document.

According to the current policy, the journal issue becomes full open access within a year from the publication. All authors have the right to parallel publish the article’s Author Accepted Manuscript version in a repository immediately on publication with a CC BY-ND license.

Deadline for full text submissions is 10 February 2023.

Texts can be submitted via email to the Guest Editor, guadalupe.lopez.iniguez@uniarts.fi

On behalf of the FJME Editorial Board,
