If you are moving from far away, furnishing your new apartment in a new country might be confusing. When I first moved to Finland, I focused on buying just the necessities, without giving much thought to the apartment’s aesthetics. Now that I’m more settled, I’ve started adding pretty tableware and decorations to make my apartment feel cozy. In this blog, I’ll share tips on where to buy furniture, tableware, and decorations in Helsinki.

Furniture, Home Textiles, Tableware

Let’s take care of the necessities first!

IKEA

An obvious choice, Ikea is an affordable and accessible option for new furniture. Ikea is a well-known brand worldwide and a great place to find affordable furniture, tableware, and home textiles. My tip is to check the reduced price section near the cash registers in physical Ikea stores. This section often has items with minor defects that are still perfectly usable. They also offer online ordering, pick-up, and home delivery, which can be super convenient.

Jysk, Sotka, Masku

Jysk, Sotka, and Masku are Finnish furniture stores that are similar to Ikea. They sell a variety of furniture and home supplies. Prices vary, so you can find both affordable and higher-end items.

Buy Second Hand

In Finland, you can find almost anything second-hand in excellent condition. Some physical shops I recommend are Kierrätyskeskus, Fida, and Red Cross. These second-hand shops inspect the condition of furniture and utensils before selling, so you can trust the quality of your purchase. Many of them even offer home delivery for larger items.

You can also explore online options like Tori.fi and Facebook Marketplace. There are plenty of listings, but you need to be more cautious about the condition of the items when buying from these sources.

Decorations

Here are some of my personal favorites for home decorations:

Muji

At Muji, you can find sleek tableware, utensils, and textiles. The style is minimalistic and practical, with high-quality goods. While they also sell furniture, it might not fit everyone’s budget. My favorite items at Muji are their fragrant candles – perfect for making your home cozy during the long Finnish winter.

Søstrene Grene

This shop offers beautiful, budget-friendly tableware, décor, and textiles. The products look stylish and Instagrammable, but they may not be the most durable.

Hemtex & H&M Home

Both Hemtex and H&M Home sell stylish textiles and tableware at reasonable prices. I don’t shop there often, but they’re great options to consider.

Final thoughts

While there are many options for buying new furniture and decorations, it’s always worth considering sustainability. I recommend checking second-hand options for furniture, utensils, and decorations first and buying new items only when you’re sure you need them.
