Every Single Student Discount
My golly there are a lot of student discounts.
Hellooo, budget-savvy students. This blog is based on the recent podcast episode by Asja (@aasyalapteva) and Rong (@rrong.ci.z) and is the ultimate collection of fantastic tips for saving pennies as a student. Let’s dive into the world of discounts and explore how you can save on everything.
Unicafe
Unicafe offers buffet meals for students for €2.95, with locations spread across Helsinki and other Finnish cities, often near universities. Simply search “UNICAFE” on Google to find nearby spots. The Theatre Academy’s Unicafe is a favourite for its fun atmosphere, while Aalto University’s A-Block cafeteria with its delicious bread makes it worth the visit despite the distance. Another yummy popular spot is Musiikkitalo.
Sports
Moving one’s body is super important for well-being and studying. All sports options are so abundant that there is a blog post dedicated to the topic. But I will mention a few now. The gym at the Theatre Academy is free for all Uniarts students. It is located under the stage in Tori. Get a key from the info desk. Helsinki’s swimming halls offer student discounts. Other universities, like Aalto, provide discounted access to student sports clubs. Bicycles can be bought cheaply from tori.fi or second-hand stores, and maintained for free at Helsinki Bike Kitchen. You can bikepack.
Grocery stores
Lidl is the most affordable grocery store in Finland. Additionally, K-market and S-market offer student discount programs, providing 5% cash back each month, along with various discounts and cash prize draws. Lidl also offers a card for extra savings. Essentially, no matter which grocery store you choose, be sure to join their membership program to maximize your savings.
Extra tip: The Asian store Jiahe has the cheapest and best tofu and student discounts! These ethnic stores are the best places to get beans, legumes, rice, spices, seeds and tahini.
Coffee
For many of us, coffee is a key to a good day, and thankfully, K-market and R-kioski have a warm cup of coffee for only €1.50. They also have a stamp card where the 7th coffee is free.
Extra tip: Some places (cafes, restaurants, museums, events) might not advertise their student deals, so it is a good idea to ask! Quite often when you ask, they do. In Finnish you can say, onko teillä opiskelija alennusta?
Events
Uniarts students enjoy free access to performances at the Theatre Academy, which is conveniently located next to the Academy of Fine Arts. Many of Sibelius Academy’s student performances are also free. You can find these amazing events listed on our university website.
Museums
The Museum Card, priced at 79€, gives free entry to all museums in Finland. It is super great. Without the card, you can still enjoy free museum days offered monthly by many museums. Students also benefit from discounted entry fees. Enjoy your cultural exploration.
Art Supplies
You can enjoy a sweet 20% discount on art supplies at Tempera. Many other art supply stores also offer student discounts, so always ask. The Academy of Fine Art itself also has materials that you can buy, as well as a material budget of 100€ per student per semester and material budgets for courses.
Extra tip: Uniarts students receive discounts at Fotoyks and Mudaskan for film developing and scanning.
Transportation
HSL, the public transport company in Helsinki, offers student discounts only on the monthly ticket. For long-distance travel, VR trains offer significant student discounts on train tickets. Also, if you book your ticket three months in advance they are extremely cheap. For example, you can travel to Rovaniemi by train for €18.
Extra tip: Buy a bicycle and maintain it well.
Discover More Discounts with FrankApp
In the FrankApp, which is where your digital student card will be, there is a treasure trove of discounts ranging from outdoor gear and bookstores to even more unexpected categories.
