ARTIFICATION OF KNOWLEDGE – Visual Art as a Presenter, Research tool and a Solver for Environmental Problems
My research plan addresses fine arts as presenter, research tool and a potential solver of environmental problems. My main focus is on artification of knowledge, how knowledge translates into art and is conveyed as art. The main questions in my research are;
How environmental problems are presented, recognized, and solved in fine arts today?
The contradiction of art that deals with environmental problems; when is art making justified?
How knowledge turns into art and what are the forms of knowledge as sources of art?
What is ecological art (ekologinen taide), ecoart (ekotaide), ecoventions (ekoventiot), ecofunctional artworks (ekofunktionaaliset teokset) and art as media of ecological compensation?
What are the possibilities of art and science collaboration?
Can art function as a research tool for science or can the tools of science function as research methods for art.
The goal is to understand the meaning of art in the era of environmental crises and how art can besides bring notice to problems and conflicts to find ways, means, methods, tools, collaborations with what art can be a part of preventing the escalation of environmental problems and perhaps even function as restorer of nature. Secondly the goal is to study how art can function as research tool and as a mediator of knowledge and as actions for restraining climate change.
Regarding the possibilities of cooperation between art and science, I consider whether art can serve as a research tool for science or can tools of science be used to research art. Can I borrow science’s methods of working, measuring, measuring instruments and ways of presenting information without losing the freedom of art and its possibilities to represent things differently. I find it important to work with experts in the field of science, because I believe that we can both benefit from each other on some level, at least as mediators of information.
My teaching experience is mainly from working as an art teacher in high school and secondary school which I have done as my main job for two years. As my previous artistic work and research is based on ecology, nature and environment my interest to teach are as well around these topics.
