Common Sense
Sara Bédard-Goulet and Damien Beyrouthy’s project builds on epistemological and artistic practices to propose different situations to puzzle over a set of images from the internet that have no apparent relationship between them. These situations allow for discussions on current challenges through discussing the images, thus creating relational knowledge that reflect a plurality of perspectives. Bédard-Goulet and Beyrouthy are two of the artists-in-residence of Research Pavilion #5 .
The project description
This project aims to develop situations that question today’s knowledge economy by welcoming people to make sense of and deliberate over a set of images from the internet that present apparently unrelated topics but that address current topics on multiple levels. These situations borrow from knowledge practices that process equivalences, associations and filiation, such as genealogical research, games, discourse analysis, and sauna. They aim to create relational knowledge that reflects a plurality of perspectives and interrogate the categories that we build to make sense of the world. These collaborative sessions are developed together with a reflection on contemporary epistemology as well as on the production of artistic goods at a time that calls for limited extraction and production.
The project Common Sense relates directly to the Research Pavilion #5 theme, not only in its “idea of the entanglement of the arts with the current multitude of overwhelming challenges” but also in how we share perplexity in the face of global challenges. Taking Puzzled together in its literal interrogative and collaborative senses, this project builds on epistemological and artistic practices to propose different situations to puzzle over a set of images from the internet that have no apparent relationship between them. These situations allow for discussions on current challenges through discussing the images, thus creating relational knowledge that reflect a plurality of perspectives. They also undermine the current knowledge economy that consolidates the rule of the individual knowledge ego, and question the good of knowledge as well as the value of knowledge goods as they are exchanged in the neoliberal market. This research-creation project “emphasize[s] the continuum between experimental artistic practice and artistic research, as well as create spaces and opportunities for pluralistic research-oriented work within the arts”. It develops a reflection on contemporary knowledge-making inspired by theoretical works in epistemology together with an artistic practice that experiments with collaborative knowledge-making practices.
