Welcome to NfAR Artistic Research Circle 3: Notation, Collaboration, and Co-creation

Presenting Artistic Research through Different Media 1
Wednesday October 28 at 15 – 17.00 in space K-218 (Mylly) at Sörnäinen Campus
Live event only

We have invited artist researchers to present their research in dialogue with another researcher based on a commonality in their research (e.g. methodology, theme, media, questions). The pair was asked to together prepare a presentation of their research via the artistic research medium with which they each work.

The title and presenters for the October 2026 Artistic Research Circle:

Notation, Collaboration, and Co-creation
Miika Hyytiäinen & Hanna Chorell

Miika Hyytiäinen (composer and researcher) and Hanna Chorell (singer and researcher) work at the intersection of the singing voice and composition, often including theatrical components. Their shared question is the creation of vocal music and what social structures it involves. Their workshop lecture for this NfAR Artistic Research Circle will include short presentations and a participatory composition workshop using Soune, a graphic notation system. No musical training or notation knowledge is required to participate.

Bios
Miika Hyytiäinen is a researcher, composer, performer and teacher, specialising in singer-composer communication. His transdisciplinary works often combine humour and scientific findings to create new and embodied realities. In his doctorate (2022) and later research, he has used autoethnography and duoethnography to research composer’s work and collaboration. Currently, Hyytiäinen works as a visiting researcher at the University of Arts Helsinki and as a freelance composer, funded by the Kone Foundation.

Hanna Chorell is an opera singer, researcher and teacher. She has an extensive career as a singer spanning almost 20 years, over 30 different opera roles, opera chorus work and a wide selection of concert repertoire from early to contemporary music. As an artist-researcher she completed her DMus in 2025, with gender performances of classical singing in a concert context as her topic. She is a member of the singers’ ensemble of the Finnish National Opera and teaches at the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki.

Chorell and Hyytiäinen have co-authored an article on artistic research in music.
