Living Art Pedagogy blog starts to publish previously non-published speeches from special occasions. Significant events may fade in the memory when they are not recorded, and it may be interesting to see how past events and thoughts resonate when viewed from current perspectives.

The first blog post in this series is a speech at Uniarts Helsinki’s first promotion five years ago, on June 9, 2018 by Professor Eeva Anttila.

Dear rectors, dear conferment ceremony guests, welcome to this unique event, where we get to witness the diversity of the arts and research and celebrate the highest possible academic achievements.

Arvoisat kunniatohtorit ja promovendit, teitä katsoessani on ilo todeta, että taide viihtyy ja kukoistaa yliopistossa. Akateemisessa ympäristössä taito, tieto, opetus ja tutkimus kietoutuvat yhteen. Käsityö, harjoittelu ja mestareiden jalanjälkien seuraaminen saavat kumppaneikseen kysyvän asenteen, kriittisen keskustelun ja halun tehdä toisin. Taiteen alati muuntuva luonne puhaltaa tutkimukseen elämää, liikettä ja väriä. Taideyliopistossa taide ja tutkimus tiedostavat historian mutta hengittävät aikaamme. Ennen kaikkea, ne suuntaavat tulevaisuuteen ja rakentavat sitä. Tutkiva ote vie taiteeseen olennaisesti kuuluvan havaitsemisen, hahmottamisen ja hiomisen yhä pidemmälle. Se haastaa jokaista opiskelijaa, opettajaa ja tutkijaa avaraan tietoisuuteen ilmiöistä, joita maailma tarjoaa taiteen ja tutkimuksen aiheiksi. Näin syntyy ennennäkemättömiä taiteellisia ilmaisuja, pedagogisia kohtaamisia ja tieteellisiä tuloksia.

Distinguished honorary doctors and promovendi, your presence here today, and your exceptional accomplishments affirm that art thrives in the academia. The spirit of inquiry within artistic practice and research in the arts draws from tradition but most importantly, renews it.

The soon-to-be conferred masters and doctors represent not only a variety of different artistic fields but also different perceptions of art and its meaning. The University of the Arts Helsinki, like most universities around the world, treasures multiple world views. Classical, or traditional, contemporary and socially engaged art are equally significant in our university. Moreover, as silos between them dissolve further, our understanding of art expands. Curiosity and respect towards different views enable us to encounter otherness in ourselves, in other people, and in the world around us. Boundaries are places where “something begins its presencing”, as Homi K. Bhabha puts it (1994, p. 5).

Hyvät taiteen maisterit ja tohtorit, olette kulkeneet läpi lukemattomien porttien ja ylittäneet monet esteet. Tänään teillä on etuoikeus ja kunnia osallistua Taideyliopiston ensimmäiseen promootioon. Tätä tilaisuutta luonnehtii monimuotoisuus ja yhteisöllisyys. Yliopistomme vaalii näitä arvoja monin tavoin. Moniarvoisuuden edistämisessä meillä kaikilla on kuitenkin vielä paljon tehtävää.

For fostering excellence, we need gates. For nurturing diversity, we need bridges, that escort us “to and fro, so that we can get to other banks” (Bhabha, following Heidegger, 1994, p. 5).  

Våra kära promovender, tack vare er energi, era kunskaper och färdigheter har vi konst som påminner oss om de orättvisor som finns, som ger oss hopp om en bättre framtid och som fungerar som samhällets samvete. Konsten förändrar världen, den skapar framtiden. Jag önskar er, ärade hedersdoktorer och promovender, lycka och framgång i ert krävande och värdefulla arbete inom konst och forskning!
